[Preparation] [What to Bring] [Logistics]

Preparation

We ask each participant to submit materials in advance and to make an informal presentation to our group. Please review these instructions and suggestions. To be published in time for our trip, all materials must be submitted in advance.

“IEI Participant Information” form is due June 1, 2008 (forms have been emailed to participants).

“Forest Profiles” are due June 15, 2008.

Forest Profiles and Presentations

Forest Profiles should be submitted electronically via email to Angie by June 15, 2008.

Forest Profiles from each of our participants will be bound and presented to the group. This collection will allow you and other participants over time to access a useful profile of many of the world’s forests.

Please submit a brief profile about the forests in your home area. The “home area” can be state or region specific, whichever is most relevant to you. For purposes of comparison, please follow the suggested format below. Much of this information can be easily obtained by contacting your state department of natural resources, forestry, parks, or the environment.

All participants will be given the opportunity to share their Forest Profiles with the group during the first part of the trip. Presentations will be informal and limited to no more than ten minutes. Everyone is encouraged to bring photos, maps, and other teaching tools to help other participants get a “sense of place” about your forest.

Please attempt to provide information on the following subjects:

  1. Type of forests and common tree species.
  2. Physiographic features unique to your region and how these affect the forests where you live.
  3. How much of the land in your region is forestland and what are the other common land uses.
  4. Forest ownership (acreage or percentage of public and private ownership)
  5. Natural forces in your area which change or shape forests
  6. Current issues affecting forests in your area
  7. Common recreation uses of the forest in your region.
  8. Number of state parks and preserves dedicated to forest protection.
  9. Common products produced by the forests in your region
  10. What types of forest protection laws are in place in your area?
  11. What are the unique attributes of your area’s forests (history, wildlife, etc)?
  12. Please include credible or valuable links or references.
  13. What is, in your opinion, the best reference book for teachers on the forests of your area?
Forest Profiles presentations are given to the group as a way to familiarize participants with your home forests.
